Police Officer Injured After Being Struck By Suspected Drunk Driver

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Cobbs Creek Parkway is back open and a Philadelphia police officer is recovering Thursday morning after police say his cruiser was smashed by a suspected drunk driver.

Investigators say the accident happened around 2 a.m. at the intersection of Cobbs Creek and Christian Street.

Police say the driver of a pick-up truck smashed into the passenger side of the police cruiser while that officer was on traffic duty.

Investigators say the officer was sitting in his car at the time blocking the road to secure a crime scene on the 700 block of Cobbs Creek Parkway. That was the scene of a deadly officer-involved shooting from Wednesday evening.

The officer was taken to the hospital with aches and pains. He is expected to be okay.

Police say the driver was also taken to the hospital for an evaluation.

The driver is in custody and expected to be charged with driving under the influence.

Cobbs Creek Parkway between Christian and Catherine streets was closed for hours as police investigated.

It reopened to traffic around 5:30 a.m.
