Police: Off-Duty Delaware Trooper Fatally Shoots Boyfriend During Domestic Dispute

PIKE CREEK, Del. (CBS) -- Delaware State Police are investigating a deadly shooting involving one of their own.

A state trooper told investigators she shot her boyfriend in self-defense after a domestic dispute.

Delaware State Police say the boyfriend, 43-year-old Maurice Ifill, died at Christiana Medical Center. His body has been turned over to the Delaware Division of Forensic Sciences where an autopsy will be performed.

The quiet of Pike Creek's Fairway Falls subdivision was disrupted overnight by a shooting involving an off-duty Delaware state trooper inside her home on the 3200 block of Champions Drive.

"There was police lined up all outside the neighborhood, and they were banging on our door asking if we heard anything suspicious. and I saw a woman being carried out on a stretcher," said neighbor Casi Dublois.

State police say the trooper and her boyfriend got into a fight that quickly turned physical just after 11 p.m.

"She was being severely beaten by the boyfriend which led to the trooper, who was off-duty, grabbing her service weapon and firing one shot at the boyfriend," said Delaware State Police Cpl. Gary Fournier.

The boyfriend was struck once in the chest. The trooper then called 911.

New Castle County and state police arrived, spending hours on the scene collecting evidence.

Paramedics rushed the couple to Christiana Hospital.

"She's very nice, she always said hello," said neighbor Mackenzie Garrison.

Neighbors say the trooper, who they knew as Jackie, has two teenage daughters. They were not home at the time of the shooting.

"It's horrible. I know she has two kids, too, so I hope everything is okay," said Garrison.

State police say it's too early in the investigation to determine what, if any, charges will be filed.
