Police: 5 Arrested, Charged In Attack On Lifeguards In Ocean City

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Being a member of the Ocean City Beach Patrol means more than just watching the water.

Lifeguards are there for any beach-goer with an issue.

"People come up to them with all kinds of problems and this is one of the things they handle and most of the time all the time we don't have a problem like this," Capt. Steven K. Ang of the Ocean City PD said.

Around 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, several families reported to lifeguards manning the 8th Street beach that a group of people were disrupting others by appearing intoxicated, acting rowdy and using loud vulgar language.

Police say that lifeguards approached the group and asked for their cooperation.

"Had they gotten it, the incident would have been over," Capt. Ang said. "No harm. No foul. Instead, this escalated into a physical confrontation with the lifeguards."

When officers arrived to assist police say the group began to assault the officers as well.

"A couple of the guys decide they are going to run," Capt. Ang said. "They ran up on the boardwalk into one of our amusement piers."

Inside Gillian's Wonderland Pier, the two men who fled were taken into custody without incident.

Arrested on charges of aggravated assault, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct were Harold Corbin, 25, and Darnell Willingham, 29, both of Philadelphia, and Breland Roach, 26, and Qwanayzia Nelson, 23, both of Harrisburg. Trevis Willingham, 34, of Philadelphia, was charged with disorderly conduct.

No one was seriously hurt.

"The worst part about this is that they took the attention from the lifeguards away from the water to an incident on the beach," Capt. Ang said.
