15-Year-Old Girl Dead, Another Teen Injured In Olney Double Shooting

By Walt Hunter and Dan Wing

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Philadelphia Police say an innocent 15-year-old student, walking home with her friend from the nearby Delaware Valley Charter High School, was gunned down outside the Einstein Medical Center in Olney.

It happened just after 4 p.m. Monday afternoon.

A 19-year-old young man, shot twice, is now in critical condition after, police say, a teenage gunman pulled a weapon from a student's backpack and suddenly began firing.

Students and residents in the busy block outside the hospital, only a hundred yards from SEPTA's Olney Transportation Center, ducked and ran for cover.

Investigators say the incident began when a crowd of more than 50 teenagers, many of them students, began fighting at the Transportation Center, then headed south on Broad Street and Old York Road where the shootings took place.

Police sources tell CBS 3 Eyewitness News they believe the violence is in retaliation for previous fight in which a young woman was beaten.

Homicide detectives say they believe surveillance cameras on the hospital grounds, and at the Transportation Center and nearby businesses could play a valuable role in catching the killer.

"There are many, many cameras that may have not only captured the shooting, but very possibly captured the shooter coming to, or leaving from the location of the shooting," Chief Inspector Scott Small says said.

"It's sad. A mother has to deal with the fact that her 15-year-old is gone now. That's hurtful. And every person, every parent should be able to feel that in their hearts," a neighbor said.
