PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Police are searching for a vehicle and a driver involved in a hit-and-run accident early this morning in South Philadelphia.

Police are looking for a burgundy Hyundai Santa Fe with front end damage. A witness told police a 31-year-old man was walking across Front Street at Oregon Avenue shortly after 3:30 a.m., when he was struck by the Hyundai.

The vehicle then took off.

The witness and a friend got into another vehicle and followed the Hyundai, taking photos of the operator, his license plate and damage to his vehicle.

The witness told the operator of the Hyundai to return to the scene of the accident.

The operator did return to the scene, and asked the injured man if he wanted a ride home. But when medics arrived, the operator fled again.

The pedestrian is in stable condition at Jefferson Hospital.
