Police ID Teen Charged In Rittenhouse Square Shooting

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Police have identified the teen charged with allegedly shooting a man who was trying to thwart an attempted robbery in Rittenhouse Square.

Authorities say 17-year-old Mehdi Fraiji is accused of shooting the 39-year-old man multiple times inside the park last Tuesday.

Rittenhouse Square Shooting Prompts Public Safety Meeting

Investigators say two people were approached by the suspect and at least one other male when the men announced a robbery.

Police say the victim tried to intervene and stop the robbery.

Authorities say Fraiji then allegedly took the gun from the other male and fired numerous shots at the victim.

Police say the men fled the scene without taking anything.

Around 4 a.m. Saturday, police say Fraiji turned himself in at Central Detective Division.

Police say he is charged with Attempted Murder, Criminal Conspiracy, Aggravated Assault, Robbery, VUFA, Possessing An Instrument of Crime, and related offenses.
