Police ID Suspect Wanted In Union League Theft
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Philadelphia police now say they know who they're looking for in Monday's vandalism that destroyed the iconic staircase at the Union League.
Police have issued an arrest warrant for 50-year-old Reginald Phillips. His last known address was at 3100 North Broad Street. He's the guy police say is in the surveillance video. from 3 a.m. Monday, seen carrying a 6-foot section of the curbed brass railing after yanking it from its moorings on the Union League steps.
"He actually took a piece to a scrapyard and sold it there," said Police Lieutenant John Stanford. "And we actually were able to recover a portion of that, and that was returned."
Stanford says damage to the historic staircase is estimated at $100,000. The Union League is working on replacing the railing.
Phillips has a long arrest record going back more than 30 years with convictions for offenses including theft, burglary and drug charges.
