Police ID Officer Shot By Suspect In Northeast Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Philadelphia Police have released the identity of the officer who was shot by a suspect in Northeast Philadelphia Wednesday morning.

Authorities say the suspect shot Officer Francis Whalen, a 17-year veteran assigned to SWAT, in the stomach with a .40 caliber semi-automatic handgun.

Police say Whalen returned fire striking the suspect, Devon Guishard, as he ran towards a bedroom.

Officials say Officer Whalen and Guishard were both rushed to Aria-Torresdale Hospital where Guishard was later pronounced dead.

Authorities say Officer Whalen's vest absorbed the bullet fired by the suspect. He was treated for a contusion to his stomach and released from the hospital a few hours later.

Police say Guishard's gun was recovered, with obliterated serial numbers, and was loaded with 13 rounds.

Officials say Officer Whalen has been placed on administrative duty pending the outcome of the preliminary investigation.
