Police: Former Bookkeeper Caught Altering Financial Records of Food Company

PHILADELPHIA (CBS)—A former bookkeeper for a New Jersey food catering company is now facing charges after state police say she was caught altering financial records resulting in the loss of more than $112,000.

In May of 2015, the owner of a Hunterdon County-based catering company contacted police when her bank notified her about several delinquent mortgage payments for the business.

A 17-month investigation led to the arrest of the company's former bookkeeper, Kay Hayes, 54, of Lambertville, N.J.

Hayes is accused of writing multiple checks for fabricated company expenses, writing and cashing unauthorized checks, posing as the victim to open an unauthorized line of credit, and altering banking statements and internal records to hide her thefts.

Hayes was arrested at her residence without incident. She was taken to Kingwood Station where she was charged with theft, forgery, uttering, and tampering with records. She was lodged at the Somerset County Jail in lieu of $50,000.
