Police: Suspect Allegedly Tried To Run Over Toms River Officer

TOMS RIVER, N.J., (CBS) – Police have taken a man into custody who they say tried to run over a Toms River police officer Wednesday afternoon.

Investigators say around 4:16 p.m., Toms River police officers approached a vehicle in the Grande Woodlands Development of Toms River.

According to police, the vehicle was suspected of being involved in drug activity within the residential neighborhood.

Investigators say the driver, identified by police as 24-year-old Shamar Kerr, of Jackson, N.J., allegedly attempted to run over a police officer with his car. The officer then fired his gun, according to investigators.

Police say Kerr fled the vehicle on foot.  He was later taken into custody around 8:42 p.m. near the intersection of Route 9 and Cox Cro Road.

According to police, Kerr is facing the following charges: attempted murder, eluding police, and possession of a controlled dangerous substance with the intent to distribute.  Bail has been set at $500,000.
