Police Commissioner Ross Calls For Leadership At Department's Promotional Ceremony

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Dozens of Philadelphia's finest are moving up in rank. The police department's promotional ceremony on the Temple University campus was held on Friday.

Philadelphia Police Commissioner Richard Ross has gone through his share of promotions, so its significance is not lost on him, as he made the grade from patrol to special ops, detective, homicide, internal affairs, to commissioner.

"If you already know that this is not your last promotion, get this job down first," Ross said.

Then, he says, it's OK to work hard to the next step.

"It's important that you recognize getting promoted is truly a privilege and not a right," he explained.

He began with the 21 who made detective, and will begin work gathering evidence and facts for criminal cases.

"You are joining the ranks of some of the finest members of the department that wear this gold badge," Ross said.

Then the Commissioner turned to 16 new Corporals, 49 Sergeants, 27 Lieutenants, 11 Captains and two Inspectors.

"One of your jobs as a leader is not only to lead by example, but you are to inspire and motivate," he told them.

Mayor Jim Kenney also congratulated the new supervisors.

"Wish you well, be safe, and make your troops proud of you," Kenney said.
