Man Dies While Trying To Rescue Dog From Pennypack Creek

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Authorities say a man is dead after jumping into Pennypack Creek to rescue his dog.

Police say witnesses reported the body floating in the creek around 9:30 a.m. Monday, near the 8500 block of Verree Road in Northeast Philadelphia.

The witnesses say they were fishing when the spotted the man's body.

Police say a 68-year-old man was walking his dog near the creek when the dog either jumped or fell into the water.

Authorities say the man jumped into the water to save the dog, but was swept away by the current.

Responding firefighters could not reach the victim's body so the police marine unit was called.

Police recovered the body and the man was officially pronounced dead at the scene around 10 a.m.

Police say the victim's dog was found at his owner's car.
