PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The Philadelphia Police Department Narcotics Bureau arrested dozens this week in the narcotics initiative in the city's East Division, and as KYW's Hadas Kuznits reports, more operations are yet to come.

Inspector Melvin Singleton with the Philadelphia Police Department Narcotics Division says police are cracking down on drug dealers and buyers in the city's East Division.

"We have young children and their parents having to walk through these open-air drug markets on their way to school. And we have to do more to give the community some relief."

This week's East Division Narcotics Initiative resulted in 60 arrests and 24 cars confiscated, as folks allegedly tried to make drug purchases in the area of Front and Somerset.

"We have a quantity of heroin confiscated, crack confiscated and marijuana confiscated."

Singleton says this is the first of many busts yet to come, the goal of which is to send a message.

"To any buyer, that if you think that it's a good idea to come into Philadelphia to purchase illegal narcotics, you're going to be arrested and charged, your vehicle will be confiscated."
