Cops: Racing May Be To Blame In Kensington Crash That Killed 3-Year-Old
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A 3-year-old girl is dead after a crash in the Kensington section of the city last night, and Philadelphia Police believe that the crash may have been the result of drag racing.
Police and emergency crews responded to the area of 2nd and York Streets a little after 7 p.m. That's where police say a 17-year-old crashed a sedan into a parked car with a mother, grandmother and a 3-year-old girl inside.
Chief Inspector Scott Small tells CBS 3 Eyewitness News that the impact from the crash was so powerful it threw the toddler from the car.
"We believe her body exited from the passenger side rear-door window, and she was found on the sidewalk."
The young girl was rushed to St. Christopher's Hospital where she was pronounced dead.
The 17-year-old driver was also hospitalized with minor injuries.
Police say witnesses also spotted a dark-colored late 90s Honda that may have been racing the driver who crashed strike a light pole and tear a fire hydrant from the ground before leaving the area.
They want to talk to the driver of that vehicle.
