Police: 2 Newborns Found Dead Near Car Lot In North Philadelphia
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Authorities are investigating the deaths of two newborns whose bodies were found in North Philadelphia.
Police said the bodies of a newborn baby boy and a newborn baby girl were found just before 10:30 a.m. Sunday lying in the grass next to a used car lot in the city's Kensington neighborhood by a 9-year-old boy and his friend who were walking down the alley.
"That's when I looked right there, and saw two babies," the boy told KYW Newsradio, "and thought it was baby dolls."
Police said the children then ran home and told their parents what they saw.
"I said, 'come on, we've gotta find out what this really about, if they're babies, we've gotta let somebody know,'" said the boy's father.
Authorities were notified and the babies were pronounced dead minutes later by a medical unit.
Police said the babies appeared to be twins and that at least one still had the umbilical cord attached. Authorities said it appeared they had been in the lot for several days.
There was no immediate information about the cause of death.
Police say, according to the medical examiner, it looks like the babies had an autopsy performed on them before they were dumped in the lot.
