Police: 1 Dead After Tree Falls On Vehicle, Accident In Radnor Township

RADNOR TWP., Pa., (CBS) – A man is dead after a tree fell on his vehicle and he struck another vehicle in Radnor Township, according to police.

Police and rescue crews responded to Sproul Road and Sunny Hill Lane shortly before 5 p.m. Monday.

Radnor Township Police say the man was traveling south on Sproul Road (Route 320) when a tree fell and struck his vehicle, crushing and compacting the roof into the passenger compartment of the vehicle.

Police say the vehicle continued to travel south on Sproul Road and crossed into the northbound lane, striking a vehicle traveling north on Sproul Road.

Police say the male driver, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, was trapped in the vehicle and sustained very significant head injuries as a result of the tree crushing the car.

The Radnor and Bryn Mawr Fire Companies used hydraulic extrication tools to cut the roof off of the vehicle to access the passenger compartment.

The driver was subsequently removed from the vehicle and taken to Paoli Hospital Trauma Center where he later died, police said.

The identity of the driver is not being released at this time due to pending notification of family members.

The occupants of the other vehicle were not injured.

Police say there were two spans of PECO wires that were taken down when the tree fell onto the roadway. PECO and Asplundh Tree Crews are on location and will be in the process of removing the tree and replacing the down power lines.

Police expect the roadway to be closed overnight and through the Tuesday morning rush hour.

Radnor Police Patrol and Highway/Traffic Safety Officers are currently conducting this accident investigation.
