Point Breeze Schools, Community Center Receive Make-Over

By John McDevitt

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Hundreds of Point Breeze students may not recognize their schools when they return to class on Monday. About 1,000 volunteers gave some schools and a community center a make-over on Saturday.

McDaniel Elementary School principal LaChante Collier-Bacon was thanking volunteers for all their hard work. Colorful murals were painted in stairwells and hallways, plant boxes on rollers were built, and a new playground was among improvements.

"Our students need a change. They need a positive place to play," says Collier-Bacon. "A great environment that is inviting, where it can promote student pride, school pride, motivation, academic success. I think that goes hand in hand."

City Year and Wells Fargo Bank volunteers worked on McDaniel Elementary, McDaniel Annex, Dixon Learning Academy and Dixon House Community Center.

More than 800 backpacks were stuffed with school supplies and will be given to each student.
