Plenty Of Changes For Eagles On Doug Pederson's First Day

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The formal announcement of Doug Pederson as head coach of the Eagles was the big news of the day in South Philadelphia.

But it was far from the only news on a frigid Tuesday.

Early in Pederson's news conference, he confirmed the team has hired Jim Schwartz to be his defensive coordinator. Schwartz brings an impressive track record. In addition to serving time as head coach of the Lions, Schwartz also ran the defense in Buffalo two seasons ago. The Bills finished fourth in the league in defense that season and Buffalo's defense dropped off dramatically with Schwartz's departure. Schwartz says he will have plenty of talent to work with in Philadelphia.

"This is a very talented defensive group," said Schwartz. "There's talent on all three levels on this defense up front, with the linebackers and the secondary. That made it easy to say yes."

Schwartz has run a 4-3 defense in the past, and the Eagles are expected to go to the 4-3 alignment next season. However, Schwartz says he will design his defense to whatever works best for his players.

"I don't think I've ever labeled myself a scheme guy," Schwartz said. "A system is more a way or operating. I think the guiding principal of any kind of system that I've run is let the players do what they do best."

The announcement of Schwartz's hiring came early in the news conference. A bigger surprise came later in the media session from Jeffrey Lurie. The owner announced the team would be looking for a player personnel director beginning next week, leaving the role of Howie Roseman in doubt. A humbled Roseman met with the media and said he has gained a freshed perspective after losing much of his personnel power a year ago.

"Having the time to do that and get some perspective about it was really kind of instrumental," said Roseman. "I have a big family. I've been able to get some time with them and really get some perspective on things."

All indications are that Roseman won't have the same power he had two years ago. Roseman says he is prepared to accept any role given to him by the organization he loves. He also plans to relate better to the people he works with in South Philadelphia.

"I think it goes back to what was really important to me," Roseman said. "That was the relationships, so how can I build better relationships? I didn't put my head in the sand and just say everyone was wrong. I felt like I had to look into myself and figure out a way to make people know that I care about them."

More change is likely on the way in the coming weeks. The Eagles still need an offensive coordinator and also have to make a decision regarding Quarterback Sam Bradford.

But the first day of the Doug Pederson era was anything but boring.
