WYOMING, Del. (CBS) -- A pilot and his passenger escaped injury after the plane they were flying in crash landed in Delaware early Friday morning.

The incident happened shortly after 7 a.m. at the Jenkins Airport just west of Wyoming, Delaware.

According to investigators, the 62-year-old pilot of a single engine Piper plane was making a planned landing at the airport.

The aircraft, which is a 1980 Piper fixed wing plane, landed on the grassy runway and then continued across Westville Road before coming to a stop on the south side of the roadway in an empty yard.

The investigation is in its early stages and detectives are working with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to determine the cause of the crash.

The pilot and a 43-year-old passenger from New Jersey were uninjured.
