Superintendent Says Plan To Cut Public Transportation Fare For High Schoolers Off The Table

By Mike DeNardo

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – A plan to save $3.6 million by cutting TransPasses and tokens to high schoolers who live two miles from school is off the table, says Superintendent William Hite.

"We withdrew that because we're in conversations now with SEPTA, and we're trying to find a way to resolve this issue," Hite explained.

The transportation cuts were among a series of reductions Hite announced a week ago to help schools open on time. The move would have affected 7,500 students, including up to 1,000 Archdiocese students.

"We're empathetic to what the School District is going through. We know what it's like to get blood from a stone," said Jason Budd, the Archdiocese's deputy secretary for Catholic education.

Hite says he hopes to announce a resolution as early as next week.
