New Deal Means Increased Salary, More For Philadelphia Orchestra Musicians

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The Philadelphia Orchestra opened their new season with a strike last week and over the weekend, they reached a tentative agreement to end the strike.

On Tuesday, the Board of Directors for the Philadelphia Orchestra Association unanimously approved the new contract with the Musicians of The Philadelphia Orchestra, Local 77 of the American Federation of Musicians.

The new agreement will last through September 15, 2019.

Musicians will see a raise under the new collective bargaining agreement. Salaries will go up 2 percent in the first year and 2.5 percent in the second and third year. The minimum base pay for musicians will go up to $137,800 in the final year of the deal.

Also, additional compensation can be earned based on the financial success of the orchestra.

The deal also includes the expansion of the orchestra to 97 musicians, flexibility to stage more pop-up concerts and the expansion of Sunday concerts among other terms.
