Philly Free Streets: 'Safe Environment For Physical Activity And Learning"

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - The city is planning to close nearly eight miles of streets for one day next month to encourage healthy lifestyles.

The one-day event is called 'Philly Free Streets' and will take place on September 24th.

From 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. people will be able walk, bike and play on the open stretch of streets.

Mayor Jim Kenney spoke at a press conference at Front and South Streets in Queen Village:

"From the vibrant South Street Business corridor to the Schuylkill river trail and Martin Luther King Jr. Drive on to the Parkside neighborhood and Fairmount Park, Philly Free Streets will transform our streets into a safe environment for physical activity and learning".

The project stems from the Papal visit where miles of streets were car free and put to good use by pedestrians and bikers.

Information about the city's waterways, public art, architecture, environment, and cultures will be included in programming along the route.
