Phillies Sign RHP Kevin Correia

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The Phillies announced the signing of right-handed pitcher Kevin Correia on Monday. Correia signed a major league contract with the team and is expected to report to Cincinnati where the Phillies kick off a series with the Reds on Monday night.

Correia, 34, pitched for the triple-A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants for the first two months of the season.

He was 0-1 with a 3.58 ERA during that span. Through six starts, he posted 25 strikeouts in 37.2 innings.

"Kevin fills a need by adding depth, durability and experience to our pitching staff," said Phillies General Manager Ruben Amaro Jr.  "We hope that he can give us quality innings to take some heat off the bullpen."

In his big league career, Correia has pitched for the Giants, Padres, Pirates, Twins and Dodgers. Correia has made 216 starts in the major leagues while going 76-95 with an ERA of 4.59.
