Phillies Look For Second Straight Win Over Pirates

by Matt Leon

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The Phillies will hope for another really good start from Alec Asher tonight as they continue their series with the Pittsburgh Pirates at Citizens Bank Park. The Phillies won the opener last night, 6-2.

Asher made his first start at the big league level last week in Washington and he was really good. He pitched six shutout innings in a 4-1 win, picking up his first Major League victory. This success was in stark contrast to the seven starts Asher made for the Phillies in 2015 when he went 0-6 with a 9.31 ERA.

The Pirates will counter with right-hander Ivan Nova in this one. Since being acquired from the Yankees in an August trade, Nova has been outstanding, going 5-0 with two complete games in seven starts. Overall this season, Nova is 12-6 with a 4.13 ERA.

Last night's win for the Phils was their 64th of the season, meaning they have surpassed their 2015 win total (63-99). The 64-80 Phillies have 18 games left in the season.

KYW's Matt Leon spoke with Kevin Cooney of the Bucks County Courier Times about the Phillies and tonight's game.
