Severe weather, including heavy rain, wind, hail, to hit Philadelphia region after Phillies' home opener

A NEXT Weather Alert has been issued for Monday afternoon through tonight in anticipation of potentially severe storms in the Philadelphia region.

A flash flood warning has been issued for Philadelphia, Bucks and Montgomery Counties until 1:45 a.m. on Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service.

A tornado warning was issued by the NWS for south central Berks County, but that has been canceled.

This storm has brought severe weather, including tornadoes, to the upper Midwest, Ohio Valley, Tennessee Valley and Deep South on Sunday. That severe threat moves to the East Coast, including the entire Philadelphia area, late in the day through the evening. 

Heavy rain, damaging winds and intense lightning are the main threats. While the tornado threat is low, it's not zero. The greatest threat for tornadoes is across Virginia and the Carolinas.

Possible impacts include travel delays, localized flooding, power outages and downed trees and branches.

Storm timing and threats

We're watching storms bubbling up ahead of the main line of storms this afternoon, with the heaviest rain and most intense storms slated to move in tonight:

  • 6-8 p.m.Philly and I-95 Corridor
  • 8-10 p.m.: Inland South Jersey, the Jersey Shore, and the southern half of Delaware
  • 12 a.m. - 1 a.m.: Leaving the Shore

  • Damaging winds
  • Heavy rain (over 1-2 inch possible)
  • Intense lightning
  • Brief, isolated tornado – though not likely
  • Hail up to 1 inch

Behind the storm on Tuesday, temperatures will drop 20 degrees to more spring-like conditions in the mid-50s. Wednesday remains in the 50s, and by Thursday, we rebound to the 70s with showers each day through next weekend.

Severe weather does not look likely at the end of the week; just plain spring showers and perhaps a non-severe rumble of thunder.
