Phillies Hold Tryouts For 2015 Ballgirls

By Steve Tawa

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Spring training may be months away for the Phillies, but at Citizens Bank Park the batting cages and practice turf got plenty of use today:  it was tryouts for the Phillies ballgirls.

Dozens of candidates showed off their on-field skills and their off-field personalities.

"I have loved baseball since I was a little girl," said Amandah Povilitus, a fitness instructor and sixth-grade teacher.  "My dad was my coach growing up.  I've played since I was able to hold a bat."

Erin Quence, who plays for West Chester University, had quite a throwing arm.

"You're out there with eyes that are on all of the players," she says.  And a play could come your way.

"Exactly -- you have got to be ready and on your feet!"

Michele DeVicaris, the Phillies' manager of community and charity events, says only about ten percent of what Phillies' ballgirls do includes picking up foul balls during a game.

"The majority of the ballgirl position is off the field," she explains.  "They are the Phillies' community ambassadors."

That appeals to Ashley Alden, a St. Joseph's University senior.  "I'm more excited about the community service," she said today.  But how cool would it be snagging a ball in foul territory?

"That would be awesome!   I would love that," she admits.
