Philadelphia Zoo Receives $150K Grant Benefiting City Students

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Late last week, the Philadelphia Zoo received a $150,000 grant from First Niagara Bank.

Vic Dewan, President and CEO of the Philadelphia Zoo explains how that $150,000 grant will be used.

"Specifically, it will make sure that we're able to continue to provide outreach for Title I school kids in the region," Dewan says.

Lisa Early, a 2nd grade teacher with the Broad Street School was the first class benefiting from the grant with a zoo field trip.

"In our school district, the students are able to go on two trips a year, and they're mandated for the most part," Early said. "So this is an additional experience that they can have and connect it to learning that we're doing in the classroom."

Eight year-old Amber was among the students on that visit.

"I like coming to the zoo because there are lots of animals and I like being with my class," Amber told KYW Newsradio.
