Philadelphia Won't Be Cleveland, But DNC Security Will Be Comparable

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Cleveland is gearing up for possible turmoil when it hosts the Republican National Convention this summer. Philadelphia's job of hosting the Democrats seems easy by comparison, but the same security precautions are being taken in the city.

Philadelphia should be very safe in July when delegates come in from around the country for the Democratic National Convention. In an update by the host committee, special advisor David Cohen said both conventions are national security special events, so they both get the same federal protection -- though he hastened to add it won't be anything like the visit of Pope Francis.

"I think we're going to have a flawless security plan that does not interfere with the citizens of Philadelphia to go about their daily business," he said.

Cohen, like most of the host committee, a veteran of the 2000 RNC, said the secret to success is to over-prepare.

"We are in the process of preparing for everything," Cohen said. "90 percent of what we prepare for we will never use."

He said security will be focused on the Wells Fargo Center.
