Philadelphia Treatment Facility Offering Preview of Ken Burns' New Cancer Documentary

By Lynne Adkins

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A special preview screening of a cancer documentary is set for tonight in Philadelphia.  The film is produced by Ken Burns, well known for his documentaries on baseball, the Civil War, World War II ("The War"), the Roosevelts, and more.

Tonight's preview for the cancer community is sponsored by Cancer Treatment Centers of America in Philadelphia.

The documentary is called Cancer: The Emperor of All Maladies.   It features history, personal experiences, and information on cancer research.

Dr. Maurie Markman, CTCA's president of medicine and science, says the documentary is based on a book that he himself has read and found memorable.

"It was incredibly moving and incredibly insightful," Markman told KYW Newsradio.  "I've read a lot of history books, (and know) the past, present, and the future (of cancer treatment).  But (it made me think), 'I know about that, I felt that, I've seen that, I've interacted with patients in that way!' "

The three-part, six-hour documentary airs on PBS beginning March 30th at 9pm.
