Philadelphia Student Honored For Video Game Creation

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A Northeast Philadelphia high school senior was honored this week for creating a video game aimed at encouraging education.

Nicodemus Madehdou of New Foundations Charter High School was honored in Washington, DC by the Entertainment Software Association. He was one of 20 minority young people chosen as Leaders on the Fast Track Fellows in Video Game Innovation. Madehdou's game, called Turbo Finger Swipe, is geared toward students K-8.

"This is one way to unconsciously teach kids how to problem solve, and also in a fun way, so they can use it in school, in class, without knowing, oh, wow, that actually helped me. But 'Oh, it feels natural!' Ya know?" Madehou says.

He began working on the game after joining Jump Button Studios. Madehdou says more skills, like map reading, math calculations and other problem solving, should be incorporated into video games because kids are plugged into their phones and tech systems more than they are in school.
