Philadelphia Police: FedEx Delivery Driver Critically Wounded After Being Shot Twice In Queen Village

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A FedEx delivery driver is in the hospital fighting for his life, after he was shot on the job in South Philadelphia Tuesday. The shooting happened on the 800 block of South 3rd Street, shortly before noon.

"Never in my life have I ever been close to anything like this," Queen Village resident Donna Bailey said. "It's terrifying."

Bailey was inside her condo near 3rd and Christian Streets when she heard gunfire ring out just before noon.

"I heard seven gunshots, just really fast one after the other. And then I heard somebody yell a curse word two times," she said.

She soon learned that a FedEx driver making deliveries in the area was shot once in the chest and once in the leg.

"I just talked to some of my neighbors and they said he just made a delivery at their house," Bailey said.

Officers responded within minutes and rushed the roughly 30-year-old man to Jefferson University Hospital.

Meanwhile, crime scene investigators closed off surrounding streets to look for shell casings and other evidence inside and outside the delivery truck.

Neighbors say such violence is unusual for Queen Village, but realize it can happen anywhere.

"It's the city, wherever you live, it's the city," said Ilene Fink.

FedEx called the shooting a "terrible incident."

"We are aware of the terrible incident involving a team member in Philadelphia this afternoon, and our thoughts are with him during this time," the company said in a statement. "There is no higher priority for FedEx Ground than the safety of our team members. We are cooperating fully with the authorities as they conduct their investigation."

Police say they have a man in custody but they have not yet identified him. So far, the gun has not been located and there is no word yet on a motive.
