Mother, 2-year-old daughter shot by stray bullets in Olney, Philadelphia police say
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A 2-year-old and her mother were shot in Philadelphia's Olney section Wednesday night, police said.
The shooting happened on the 100 block of Albanus Street at around 8 p.m. Authorities said the mother and daughter were on their porch when they were each hit by stray bullets.
Police said the 30-year-old mother was shot once in the right side of her head and multiple times throughout her body. She was placed in extremely critical condition at Albert Einstein Medical Center, according to police.
The 2-year-old was shot once in the right leg and left leg, authorities said. She was placed in stable condition.
More than 30 shell casings were at the scene of the shooting. Investigators were on the scene for hours collecting evidence.
"We believe the mom and daughter were sitting in the steps and were innocent bystanders," Deputy Commissioner James Kelly said.
"Two different groups firing at one another," he added.
A person of interest is in custody and a weapon was recovered, but police said they are still looking for other people involved.
"Thank God the baby will be OK, but a 2-year-old baby shot a complete tragedy," Kelly said.
