Philadelphia Region Apparently Filled With Scrooges When It Comes To Donating To Charity

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – It turns out residents in our area are not so generous.

A new report from WalletHub.com reveals that while the United States is the world's most charitable country (along with Myanmar), residents of Delaware, Pennsylvania and especially New Jersey aren't quite as giving as those in other regions of the country.

Using data from several major organizations including the U.S. Census Bureau, the IRS and the National Center for Charitable Statistics, WalletHub says it analyzed each state according to eight key metrics.

Of the 50 states, New Jersey ranked 47th for charitable giving, and Pennsylvania and Delaware didn't do much better. The Keystone State ranked 35th and the First State came in 37th.

The most charitable state was Utah, followed by South Dakota. Idaho and Kansas tied for third.

Another key finding: Red states are slightly more generous than Blue states.

While giving to charity isn't all about money, the report is a wake-up call for the Greater Philadelphia area -- especially during the holiday season -- because it included volunteering as well.
