Philadelphia Political Figures Remember Former Bodyguard, Driver Who Died

By Steve Tawa

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - A well-known and beloved Philadelphian who worked behind the scenes for decades protecting some of Philadelphia's best known political figures will be laid to rest this week.

Anthony Fulwood was "Tony" to everyone he knew, including former Philadelphia District Attorney Lynne Abraham, who didn't even come up to his belt buckle:

"He was gigantic, but he was as nice a human being as you'd ever want to meet," she says.

At over 6-foot-5 and 320 pounds back in the day, Tony was the bodyguard and driver for Frank Rizzo when he was Police Commissioner then Mayor, for former District Attorney Ron Castille, and for Lynne Abraham when she was DA.

"I was with tony, other than Rizzo, more of my lifetime than any other human being, including my husband, because I was with Tony 18 hours a day for 16 years," Abraham says.

Tony Fulwood died of multiple myeloma at age 72. Services will be Thursday at 11 a.m at Deliverance Evangelistic Church on Lehigh Avenue.
