Philadelphia Leaf Collection Program Returns, With Some Changes

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Fall is here, and many people's yards are full of leaves that need to be raked, bagged and disposed of.

From Monday, Nov. 10 through Friday, Dec. 19, the Streets Department will be offering leaf recycling to help residents dispose of foliage, but officials say there are some changes to note.

First off, bagged leaves will not be collected curbside. Drop-off locations will be offered city-wide on Saturdays (except for the Saturdays following Veterans Day and Thanksgiving). There are 22 designated locations that will be open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Furthermore, bagged leaves will only be accepted in biodegradable bags of up to 40 lbs each.

Properly bagged leaves can also be taken to four city sanitation centers. Those centers are located at 63rd & Passyunk Avenue, at Domino Lane and Umbria Street, at State Road and Ashburner Street and at 2601 W. Glenwood Avenue.

Mechanical leaf collection will be offered to supplement leaf drop-off in areas with a heavy accumulation of leaves. Residents are asked to rake leaves to the curb's edge by 7 a.m. the day of scheduled mechanical collection.
