FAA lifts ground stop, adds ground delay for incoming flights until 6:59 p.m.

Philadelphia International Airport reporting delays, cancellations Tuesday

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The FAA has lifted the ground stop originally set for all flights arriving at Philadelphia International Airport. However, a ground delay for incoming flights will be in effect until 6:59 p.m.

The ground stop that had been in effect until 1 p.m., was pushed back until 2 p.m. Tuesday as the area got its first accumulating snowfall in nearly two years

"Flights are still departing PHL," the airport said on X.

Dozens of flight delays and cancellations were reported at Philadelphia International Airport Tuesday morning, mostly because of bad weather in other parts of the country is also impacting local flights.

As of 5:30 a.m., airport spokesperson Heather Redfern told CBS Philadelphia that PHL was reporting 29 cancellations and 21 delays.

Before 12 p.m., that number had risen to 44 cancellations and 216 delays, according to FlightAware.

Redfern explained that many of the disruptions Tuesday morning were impacting arriving flights, a domino effect from delayed and canceled flights in areas like the south and upstate New York on Monday and throughout the weekend.

"Crews can't get to where they need to be, equipment can't get where it needs to be, so that will probably switch as this goes on today," she said.

Because of nationwide disruptions in large hubs like Dallas and Denver, Redfern said it could take about a day for flights to get fully back on track.

Travelers are urged to check with their airlines directly for more information on flight delays and cancellations. For a look at the arrival and departure statuses at PHL Airport, click here.
