PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A group of high school students helped organize a fundraiser held in South Philadelphia Saturday afternoon to benefit the victims of recent earthquakes in Nepal.

Selling food, drinks and asking for donations, the 'Water for Nepal' event took over the area of 6th and Ritner Streets for most the day. Reina, a student at South Philadelphia High School, said the reason for the fundraiser is one that's close to her heart.

"I think it's our responsibility to help other countries," she said, "because there is where we are from. So I think it's our responsibility to help them."

The event also featured performances by students from a number of area schools and neighborhood groups. Kevin Chhin works with the Pennsylvania Migrant Education Program, which helped organize the event, and he said he was moved to tears when the students approached him about the fundraiser.

"It feels so touching to see and to hear the students around 14, 15, 16, 17 years old come together," Chhinn said, "and thinking of all of those victims that need our help."

Over 8,000 people were killed in the Nepal earthquakes on April 25th and May 12th. More than one million suffered injuries.
