Science Leadership Academy Installs Book Vending Machine Featuring Student Authors

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) --- A Philadelphia public high school is hosting a launch party, tonight, for a new literary venture that features an unusual sales method.
With fatty, salty junk food in disfavor, students at Science Leadership Academy are filling their vending machine with food... for thought. Six slim, Young Adult stories will be dispensed for two dollars each, including two written by current students.
"To see individual high schoolers honored through this program is really rewarding and really wonderful," said Leo Levy, art editor of the Academy's student magazine.
Anna Sugrue is the literary editor. Both Sugrue and Levy helped select which student work would be vended.
"We got lots of submissions of short stories from people who were excited to have their work on sale," Sugrue said.
The stories have been published by Philadelphia's The Head and the Hand Press, which has also sold books by vending machine in coffee shops.
