Philadelphia DA's Office Expanding Prescription Drug Drop-Off Program
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Four months after rolling out a prescription drug drop-off program, Philadelphia District Attorney Seth Williams has announced he is expanding it.
The DA says traffic has been brisk at drop-off locations in six police districts.
"Since January we have collected over 200 pounds of prescription medicines," Williams said. "Things that people just brought to the police districts."
Williams now says his office will be placing drop-off boxes at seven more police districts. It's part of a campaign to help people to clear their medicine cabinets of unused, highly addictive prescription drugs.
"You can just anonymously drop them off in these blue boxes that look like mail boxes," he said. "No one is going to ask you any questions. We want to just get them out of the home."
The latest statistics indicate that nearly half of the 655 overdose deaths in Philadelphia were caused by prescription opioids.
