Philadelphia Crafts Digital Response To Lack Of Counselors In City Schools

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- With a lack of high school guidance counselors, the city is posting online videos to help adults help students apply to college.

Philadelphia's Graduation Coach campaign is in its fourth year, and now there are new videos to help adults keep their children on track for high school graduation and college.

The mayor's chief education officer Lori Shorr says it is part of the city's answer to district cuts in school counselors.

"We've developed a digital response to this need."

Campaign Director Sayeh Hormozi says the videos called "Game Plans" are not designed to replace counselors, but they can prepare students for the limited time they may get with one.

"So now that they can watch these videos and get a little bit of sort of a foundation, they can make the most of that little window of time that they'll probably have with a counselor."

The videos on YouTube and Comcast On Demand show how to fill out financial aid forms, SAT prep, and how to choose a college.
