Philadelphia Corporation For Aging Distributes Produce Vouchers To Low Income Seniors

By Hadas Kuznits

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Low income senior citizens in Philadelphia are being given vouchers to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables.

Senior farmers' market produce vouchers were distributed at Reading Terminal Market, and Sue Gibson, nutrition manager at the Philadelphia Corporation for Aging, says that while Wednesday was their final distribution date here, it's not too late to pick up a voucher elsewhere.

"We distribute to the older adults in Philadelphia -- four vouchers, five dollars each, for locally grown produce," she explains.

She says the program is funded by the USDA and the Pennsylvania department of agriculture.

"If you're eligible, bring your proof of ID and residency of Philadelphia to either one of our senior centers in the area or to Philadelphia Corporation for aging."

Vouchers can be used at any certified farmers market through November, while supplies last.

"It's a great program, a win-win for everyone," Gibson says.
