Philadelphia Chinese Lantern Festival Officially Opens

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Franklin Square like you've never seen it before; adorned in thousands of lights and dozens of lanterns.

It is a glimpse into the far-East, brought to the Northeast for the first time.

President of Historic Philadelphia, Amy Needle says, "This company from China selected Philadelphia as the only northeast city to have this incredible festival."

Rosemarie, Shanley, who works at Franklin Square says, "It's all so beautiful."

Rosemarie has watched the Philadelphia Chinese Lantern Festival take shape.

Twenty Chinese artisans worked non-stop over the last month and a half.

"Wow. There's no words to describe the beauty and the hard work."

The four story spinning pagoda has reached new heights, and brought to life the grand Chinese dragon lantern.

Cari Feiler Bender, Historic Philadelphia spokesperson says, " You can come sit at the feet of this 200 foot dragon. It's 21 feet high and 18,000 pounds."

For the next seven weeks, visitors can enjoy the silk and steel lanterns, as well as Chinese culture.

It's also a beautiful way to celebrate Franklin Square's 10th anniversary.

Amy Needle says, "These are the candles for the cake."

Franklin Square will remain open throughout the day, but you will need to buy a ticket starting at 6 p.m. in the evening because that is when the festival flips on the lights.

A spectacle of light, from China, to Philadelphia, with love.
