Philadelphia Archdiocese Announces Closure Of 2 Catholic Churches

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Two Roman Catholic churches in the suburbs will be closed within weeks. And the Archdiocese of Philadelphia blames the cost of upkeep.

The Immaculate Conception B.V. M. Church in Levittown, Bucks County and Saint Getrude Church in West Conshohocken, in Montgomery County will close as worship sites on January 1st.

Parishioners were notified of the closures over the weekend.

The parishes merged with larger churches in July of 2014, but remained open for weddings, funerals and religious celebrations.

Funds from those services were being used to maintain the structures, but the Archdiocese says closing them is the fiscally responsible decision.

It's unclear what will happen to the buildings.
