PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The latest US census figures show that Philadelphia's population continues to recover from its 2007 ebb, though not as rapidly as in previous years.

Census Bureau demographer Ben Bolender says the city picked up about 4,500 more residents in 2013.

"The population in Philadelphia County as of 2013 was 1,553,165," he notes.

The gain is about half that of the prior few years.  Nevertheless, it is the seventh consecutive year that Philadelphia's population has increased.

In the suburbs, Montgomery County showed the largest growth, at about 3,400 people.  Bucks with the smallest increase, with a net gain of  about 600.

As for the overall metropolitan area, Philadelphia remains the sixth largest in the nation, with just over six million residents.
