Phila. School District Hangs Out 'Help Wanted' Sign

By Mike DeNardo

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The Philadelphia School District is hanging out the "help wanted" sign a little earlier this year.

Even now, this late in the school year, the district has 170 unfilled teaching positions.

Superintendent William Hite has the goal of hiring 800 teachers by June to start the year in September fully staffed.

So, Hite says, the district is launching an early recruitment effort.

"We want to be out there early, because we know that's when the best and most candidates are available. And that's one of the reasons we're starting this process much earlier than we have in the past."

Starting salary: $45,360.

Hite says for years the district was laying off, but now the district is hiring, not for new positions, but filling those lost to attrition.

The district is holding an information session at school headquarters next Tuesday at 4 p.m.
