Phila. Officials Frown On Bill Awaiting Gov. Wolf's Signature
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - A bill that would bar Pennsylvania police departments from identifying officers involved in the shooting of civilians is on its way to Governor Tom Wolf, after passing the legislature on its final day.
Meantime, Philadelphia officials are hoping he doesn't sign it.
A police spokesperson says the bill "does not comport with the Department's efforts to meet reform recommendations."
And a statement from Commissioner Richard Ross says the bill's proponents may be "missing the bigger picture," that the department is trying to build community trust, adding he would never do anything that would harm an officer.
Mayor Jim Kenney thinks it shows the wrong priorities:
"It's our preference that Harrisburg allow us to run our own police department. And I would much rather them concentrate on a fair funding formula for our public schools, pensions and infrastructure than trying to micromanage our police department."
The governor's spokesman says Wolf is reviewing the legislation.
