Phila. Archdiocese Putting Together A Pilgrimage To Rome To Mark The Year Of Mercy

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- To mark the jubilee year of mercy proclaimed by Pope Francis, the Archdiocese of Philadelphia is putting together a pilgrimage to Rome.

Father Dennis Gill, rector of the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul and the director of the Office for Divine Worship, says the archdiocese is organizing the trip for early September.

He says the 10-day tour will include stops at four basilicas in the Eternal City and the chance to pass through four holy doors proclaimed by the pope, including one at St. Peter's Basilica.

"We hope that many people in the Delaware Valley would take advantage of this opportunity to celebrate the jubilee year, to join us for this pilgrimage to Rome, and also to be present as someone is raised to the altars as a saint."

That candidate for canonization is Mother Teresa of Calcutta, who will be elevated to sainthood by Pope Francis during a Mass on St. Peter's Square on Sunday, September 4.

Gill says the journey also includes visits to shrines in Assisi and the papal summer residence, Castel Gandolfo.
