PGW Offering Rebates For Home Energy Improvements

By Mark Abrams

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The Philadelphia Gas Works is launching an effort to get homeowners to do home energy audits in exchange for rebates for improving the home's energy efficiency.

It's called the "Energy Sense Home Rebates" program, and it was launched today in Mt. Airy.

Matt Stern is with Performance Systems Development, a PGW contractor.  He and a coworker were inside a home on West Sedgewick Street today, doing the first energy audit in the neighborhood.

"We've done a visual inspection. We've also used specialized diagnostic tools to identify areas where air might be infiltrating into the home making it uncomfortable," he explained.

Homeowner Anuj Gupta says he learned a lot.

"Our basement is not well insulated, which frankly explains why this lower floor has been as cold as it has been throughout this winter," he said.  "Our back room, the barrier is not closed, so cold air is coming in through there. And these seem like easy fixes which would make a dramatic difference in our utility costs."
