PennDOT Says It's Ready For Winter

NORRISTOWN, Pa. (CBS) -- PennDOT says it has its proverbial ducks in a row as the winter driving season approaches.

The Commonwealth has budgeted over $200 million to deal with whatever winter brings statewide.

PennDOT Secretary Leslie Richards was at the agency's regional maintenance facility in Norristown to review preparations. She says the five county Philadelphia area region got off easy on the snowstorm front last year, with only one major exception. She doesn't expect that to happen twice.

"Last year, we used to be exact 56,825 tons of salt in the region and this year we have 122,000 tons available," Richards told KYW Newsradio.

Four hundred and fifty plows and trucks will be at the ready in this area, equipped with something new this year. Sensors will allow you to follow their progress on line during any storm at www.511PA.com.

The state has been phasing them in over the last couple years.

Of course, they're also asking you to give them a break, and a little space, on the road when crews are trying to clear a highway.
