PennDOT Officials Say They're Ready For A Messy Thanksgiving Eve

By Dan Wing

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) --- PennDOT is asking everyone to plan ahead to what could be a messy Thanksgiving Eve.

It's one of the busiest travel days of the year, and PennDOT says whatever the weather is, it's going to be a slower go than usual. Officials are asking everyone to drive with additional care and to allow more time to get where they're going.

PennDOT says they will have 444 snow plow trucks ready for this winter in the Philadelphia area and they have over 100,000 tons of salt ready to go.

And, of course, they are coming off last winter where they spread a record of nearly 173,000 tons of salt in the five-county, southeastern Pennsylvania region.

In addition to the plow trucks in PennDOT's fleet, officials say they have added a new truck to the fleet this year. It's got a winged-plow, with two salt sprays, which PennDOT officials say can cover almost twice as much as the normal plow trucks.

PennDOT also has their salt-brine trucks ready to go, 23 of them, including an 8,000 gallon tanker truck that can spray three lanes at once and can do all of I-76, I-476, and 422 in Montgomery county without re-fueling.
